Kenneth Okonkwo, a former Labour Party spokesperson, believes Peter Obi’s promise to serve only one term as president is a calculated political strategy to win support from northern voters. According to Okonkwo, Obi’s one-term pledge aims to reassure northerners that he won’t monopolize power, allowing the region to have its turn in the future. This strategy is rooted in Nigeria’s power rotation dynamics, where zoning informally rotates power between the North and South.
Okonkwo claims he propounded the theory of a one-term presidency, suggesting it’s a way for opposition parties to inspire Nigerians and maintain balance in power rotation. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar reportedly first floated the one-term idea, which Obi later adopted to strengthen his acceptability across regions.
