The Federal Government of Nigeria has made it compulsory for all taxable individuals and businesses to obtain a Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) by January 1, 2026. The TIN is used to track taxpayers and ensure accurate tax reporting. To get a TIN, individuals and businesses can apply online through the Joint Tax Board portal or visit a Federal Inland Revenue Service office with required documents.
Required documents include valid identification and proof of address for individuals, and business registration documents and proof of business address for businesses. Having a TIN ensures compliance with tax laws, allows for smooth business operations, and provides access to financial services and government contracts.
The TIN application process is free of charge, and processing typically takes 1-5 working days. Non-compliance may result in refusal of bank account opening, ineligibility for business or government documentation, fines, or penalties by tax authorities.
