In 2025, a two year old boy named Juwan in the UK lost vision in one eye after catching HSV-1 from a kiss. An adult with a cold sore passed the virus on, and it spread to his eye, causing a rare condition called herpes simplex keratitis. Doctors first thought it was a normal infection, but the damage kept getting worse. Unfortunately despite treatment and surgery, the vision loss was permanent.
