Professor Abdulgafar Siyan Oyeweso, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has passed away at the age of 64. He died on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, after a brief illness, following a successful surgical procedure.
Professor Oyeweso was a renowned historian, educator, and mentor who made significant contributions to education, research, and national development. He authored numerous books and over 150 scholarly articles, and was a Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Letters and the Historical Society of Nigeria.
Tributes have poured in from academic institutions, colleagues, and former students, mourning the loss of a distinguished scholar and cultural ambassador. His burial is scheduled to take place today in his hometown of Ede, Osun State .
