Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has made a bold statement, saying he’ll resign if President Bola Tinubu doesn’t win Edo State in the 2027 presidential election. He’s even set a target of 3.5 million votes for Tinubu in the state, claiming the All Progressives Congress (APC) has a strong hold on Edo. Okpebholo attributes Tinubu’s popularity to the federal government’s infrastructure projects and development initiatives in the state.
The governor’s comments have sparked mixed reactions, with some viewing it as political posturing. Okpebholo has also criticized his predecessor, Godwin Obaseki, saying his poor record has distanced him from the people.
Okpebholo’s statement ties his governorship mandate directly to the outcome of a national presidential race, a rare stance from a sitting governor. Senior APC figures in Edo have echoed his confidence, describing the 2027 vote as already leaning strongly toward Tinubu.
