The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has given the Federal Government a fresh four-week ultimatum to address outstanding issues or face another strike. This warning comes after the union suspended its two-week warning strike in October to allow for negotiations.
ASUU’s Demands:
– Renegotiation of the 2009 Agreement: ASUU wants the government to revisit and implement the agreement, which has been pending for over 16 years.
– Sustainable Funding: The union is pushing for increased funding to revitalize public universities.
– Improved Welfare: ASUU is seeking better working conditions, salaries, and benefits for lecturers.
– Revitalization of Universities: The union wants the government to address the decay in university infrastructure and facilities.
The union has accused the government of insincerity and sabotage, claiming that negotiators have resorted to delay tactics and misinformation. With the ultimatum expiring soon, ASUU is prepared to resume strike action, which could disrupt academic activities nationwide.
