Germany has pledged €49 million (approximately ₦82 billion) to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to support peace, security, economic development, and healthcare initiatives across West Africa. This commitment was made during a bilateral negotiation on development cooperation held at the ECOWAS Commission headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria, on November 4-5, 2025.
Key Areas of Focus:
– Peace and Security: Strengthening ECOWAS’s capacity for conflict prevention, early warning mechanisms, and regional stability
– Economic Development: Promoting regional integration, trade facilitation, and sustainable economic growth
– Healthcare: Enhancing healthcare systems, pandemic prevention, and response capabilities
– Institutional Strengthening: Supporting governance reforms, institutional capacity building, and regional cooperation
Germany’s commitment reflects its long-standing partnership with ECOWAS, dating back to 1985, and its confidence in the regional bloc’s efforts to address West Africa’s challenges.
