Oba Joseph Oloyede, the Apetu of Ipetumodu in Osun State, Nigeria, has been sentenced to 56 months (4 years and 8 months) in prison by a US court for his involvement in a $4.2 million COVID-19 relief fund fraud scheme. He was also ordered to pay $4,408,543.38 in restitution, forfeit his Medina residence worth $620,000, and surrender an additional $96,006.89 seized by investigators. Oloyede, a dual Nigerian and US citizen, was convicted of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, engaging in monetary transactions with criminally derived property, and making false tax returns. His co-conspirator, Edward Oluwasanmi, was sentenced to 27 months in prison and ordered to repay over $1.2 million
