The 31 US lawmakers are backing President Donald Trump’s decision to designate Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” due to alleged severe violations of religious freedom, particularly against Christians. They describe the move as a “bold and moral step” to confront the growing Christian genocide in Africa’s most populous nation.
Some of the lawmakers who have expressed support include:
– Chairman Robert Aderholt: “The persecution of Christians in Nigeria is a moral outrage. No government should turn a blind eye to innocent men, women, and children being slaughtered for their faith.”
– Sheri Biggs: “I fully support President Trump’s designation of Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern, and I’m praying for my brothers and sisters in Christ who are being targeted simply for their faith.”
– Bruce Westerman: “Religious freedom is a sacred right, and the persecution of Christians in Nigeria is horrific. I stand with the President in designating Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern.”
– Gus Bilirakis: “God bless President Trump, Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart, and Senator Ted Cruz for their principled leadership in addressing escalating religious persecution in Nigeria.”
The lawmakers are urging the US government to deploy “every diplomatic and strategic tool” to protect Nigerian Christians and ensure accountability for perpetrators of violence.
