Omoyele Sowore, a human rights activist and publisher of Sahara Reporters, was arraigned before the Federal High Court in Abuja on September 30, 2025. He faces a five-count charge for allegedly making false posts against President Bola Tinubu on social media, specifically on his verified X handle.
The Alleged Offending Post
Sowore’s post, made on August 25, reads: “This criminal @officialABAT actually went to Brazil to state that there is no more corruption under his regime in Nigeria. What audacity to lie shamelessly!” The Federal Government claims this post contravenes Section 24(2)(b) of the Cybercrimes Prohibition and Prevention Act 2024, which prohibits transmitting false statements capable of causing a breakdown of law and order.
