Ghanaian police recently rescued 57 Nigerian nationals, aged 18-26, who were trafficked into the country and forced into online romance scams and other cybercrimes. The operation led to the arrest of five suspects and seizure of 77 laptops, 38 mobile phones, two vehicles, and other digital equipment.
The victims were lured to Ghana with promises of lucrative jobs but were coerced into running online scams. Authorities are providing care and support, with plans for repatriation to Nigeria.
This operation reflects Ghana’s efforts to combat human trafficking and cybercrime, with 79 prosecutions and 54 convictions between 2023 and 2024. Interpol has also coordinated continent-wide crackdowns, resulting in 260 arrests across 14 countries.
