Cooking gas scarcity is hitting hard in Nigeria, with prices skyrocketing to as high as ₦25,000 for a 12.5kg cylinder, up from ₦17,500 just last week. The price per kilogram is now between ₦1,500 and ₦2,000, depending on the location.
The scarcity is largely attributed to a recent strike by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), which disrupted gas supply across the country, particularly affecting the Dangote Refinery, a major local supplier.
Affected Areas:
– _Lagos_: Gas stations are shutting down due to lack of product, with prices reaching ₦1,800 per kg.
– _Ogun_: Residents are paying ₦1,800 per kg, with some stations rationing stock.
– _Ibadan_: Prices have jumped to ₦1,070 per kg, with long queues forming at gas stations.
– _Abuja_: A 12.5kg cylinder now costs between ₦17,000 and ₦18,750.
The Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers (NALPGAM) assures that the situation will ease soon as supply returns to normal. Meanwhile, households are feeling the pinch, with some resorting to alternative energy sources like charcoal and firewood.
