Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, is taking a tough stance on preventing fire outbreaks and building collapses in the state. He recently inspected a devastating fire at the 25-storey Great Nigeria Insurance (GNI) House on Lagos Island, which has been marked for demolition due to safety concerns. The fire, which started on the 4th and 5th floors, affected over 10 buildings, with at least two severely damaged. Thankfully, no fatalities were recorded, but 7-10 people were injured.
Sanwo-Olu emphasized the need for heightened fire safety awareness, especially during the dry season, and urged citizens to avoid storing inflammable materials in residential and office buildings. A committee has been set up to determine the safest demolition method for the GNI building.
The Lagos State Assembly has also called for tougher safety measures, including regular fire risk assessments and mandatory fire hydrants in high-risk buildings. The state government is working to strengthen emergency response systems and enforce safety regulations.
