The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is warning of a nationwide university shutdown as negotiations with the Federal Government stall. The union’s one-month ultimatum is expiring, and they’re threatening to resume their strike if demands aren’t met.
ASUU’s Demands:
– Improved Welfare: Better working conditions and salaries for lecturers
– Revitalization Funding: Increased funding for public universities
– Implementation of Agreements: Fulfillment of previous agreements and memoranda of action
– Moratorium on New Universities: Halt on establishing new state universities without proper funding
ASUU accuses the government of being insincere and using delay tactics, while the government claims ASUU’s demands have largely been met. The union’s National Executive Council meeting revealed dissatisfaction with the slow pace of talks.
This standoff risks disrupting academic calendars and affecting millions of students. The Federal Government has yet to respond officially to ASUU’s latest ultimatum.
