The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has rejected claims of religious genocide in West Africa, describing such allegations as false and dangerous. The regional bloc emphasizes that terrorist groups in the region target civilians indiscriminately, regardless of religion, ethnicity, or age.
ECOWAS urges the international community to support member states in combating terrorism and to dismiss narratives suggesting that militant groups are waging war against a specific state of faith is being targeted.
The ECOWAS statement comes in response to former US President Donald Trump’s designation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” over alleged violence targeting Christians. Trump had threatened military action and suspension of aid if the situation wasn’t addressed.
