The Akwa Ibom State Government has suspended Chief Monday Esu, the Village Head of Ikot Umo Essien, in Essien Udim Local Government Area, due to alleged acts of terrorism and breaches of public peace. The suspension, which will last for six months, aims to facilitate a full-scale investigation into the allegations.
Allegations Against the Village Head:
– Sponsorship of Vandalism: Chief Monday Esu is accused of sponsoring vandalism and theft of facilities at newly constructed blocks of shops at the Ikot Ekpenyong community market.
– Destruction of Property: The alleged criminal elements destroyed a Fadama-sponsored borehole and VIP lavatory within the market premises, carting away valuable items.
– Intimidation of Residents: The perpetrators unleashed mayhem and intimidated residents, making them live in fear.
Government’s Action:
– Investigation: A full-scale investigation will be conducted to determine the extent of Chief Esu’s involvement in the alleged acts of terrorism.
– Handing Over of Government Property: The village head has been ordered to hand over all government property in his possession to the village council secretary.
– Warning to Traditional Rulers: The government has warned that any traditional ruler or community leader found to be aiding or abetting criminal activity will face disciplinary action.
