Former President Goodluck Jonathan is currently trapped in Guinea Bissau where the military announced take-over earlier in the day.

Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan is currently trapped in Guinea-Bissau following a military coup that took place on Wednesday. He was in the country as part of a 36-member joint election observation mission from the African Union, ECOWAS, and the West African Elders Forum, monitoring the presidential election.

The military, which has taken control of the country, has suspended the electoral process, closed borders, and imposed a curfew. Jonathan and other foreign observers are unable to leave the country as flights have been suspended and borders are closed.

The Nigerian government has condemned the coup and is working to ensure Jonathan’s safe return. The international community, including ECOWAS and the African Union, is urging the military to restore constitutional order and release detained officials.
