The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, has called for the regulation of social media in Nigeria.

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, is urging the Federal Government to regulate social media in Nigeria due to its growing abuse and potential threat to national peace and unity. He emphasizes that social media has become a breeding ground for misinformation, religious intolerance, and hate speech, and calls for responsible online engagement to address insecurity.

The Sultan’s call is supported by other prominent Islamic leaders, including Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, who suggests evolving laws to tackle defamation in the digital age without stifling freedom of expression. Former Zamfara State Governor Abdulaziz Yari also backs regulation, stating that social media abuse threatens everyone and should be used responsibly like in other countries.
