ASUU begins strike.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has commenced a two-week warning strike, effective Monday, October 13, 2025, following the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the Federal Government over unresolved demands. The strike, directed by ASUU’s National President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, aims to compel the government to address long-standing issues, including:
– Unpaid Salaries and Promotion Arrears: Lecturers’ financial stability and morale have been affected.
– Poor Funding: Infrastructure decay, inadequate facilities, and limited research capabilities in public universities.
– Lack of Genuine Government Commitment: Failure to implement previous agreements has eroded trust between ASUU and the government.

The Federal Government has threatened to implement a “No Work, No Pay” policy, emphasizing that the labour law guides its actions. Meanwhile, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has appealed for dialogue to resolve the dispute.

Impact of the Strike:
– Disruption of Academic Calendar: Hundreds of thousands of students may be affected.
– Research and Postgraduate Programs: Potential delays or disruptions.
– International Collaborations: Possible impact on partnerships and academic reputation.
