Starting today, October 1, 2025, Nigeria’s immigration authorities will indeed begin nationwide enforcement against foreign nationals who have overstayed their visas or breached entry conditions. This move follows the expiration of the federal government’s three-month visa amnesty program, which allowed foreigners with expired immigration documents to regularize their status without penalties.
Penalties for Overstaying:
- Less than 3 months: Removal from the country, a daily fine of $15, or a two-year entry ban
- 3 months to 1 year: Removal, a daily fine of $15, or a five-year entry ban
- More than 1 year: Removal, a 10-year entry ban, or a permanent ban from Nigeria
Affected Categories:
- Visa on Arrival (VoA) holders with expired visas
- Single and Multiple-Entry Short Visit or Business Visas with expired validity
- Comprehensive Expatriate Residence Permit and Automated Cards (CERPAC) holders with expired permits
Government’s Stance:
The Nigeria Immigration Service emphasizes that the enforcement aims to safeguard national security and ensure lawful migration. They encourage foreign nationals to comply with immigration regulations to avoid penalties.
