The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has indeed facilitated the safe return of 151 Nigerian nationals from Sudan through a charter flight as part of its Voluntary Humanitarian Return (VHR) program. Here’s what’s known about the situation:
– Reasons for Return: The returnees had been stranded in Sudan amid escalating conflict, facing severe challenges, including limited access to essential services and constant threats to their safety.
– Support Provided: Upon arrival in Nigeria, the returnees will receive comprehensive support, including:
– Medical Screening: to assess and address any health issues.
– Mental Health and Psychosocial Support: to help them cope with trauma.
– Vulnerability Assessments and Counselling: to identify specific needs and provide guidance.
– Referral to Specialized Services: for further assistance when needed.
– Fresh Meals and Safe Accommodation: to ensure their basic needs are met.
– Reintegration Assistance: IOM, in collaboration with partners, will provide business skills training to support income-generating activities, helping the returnees rebuild their lives with dignity and hope.
– Context: Sudan has been grappling with a protracted conflict, displacing nearly 10 million people, including migrants like the Nigerian nationals who were stranded.
– Previous Evacuations: This is not the first time IOM has facilitated the return of Nigerians from Sudan. In February 2025, another group of 140 Nigerians was evacuated, and similar assistance was provided.
