Vice President Kashim Shettima has indeed arrived in New York to represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). The assembly, scheduled from September 22 to 28, 2025, will focus on global security, climate action, sustainable development, and financing for development.

Key Highlights of Shettima’s Visit:

– Delivering Nigeria’s National Statement: Shettima is set to deliver Nigeria’s national statement on Wednesday, September 24, highlighting the country’s priorities and positions on global issues.
– Promoting Investment Opportunities: Nigeria will use the platform to promote investment opportunities, particularly in solid minerals, telecommunications, and technology, through the “Nigeria Investment Day” event.
– Climate Action: Shettima will announce Nigeria’s new Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement and participate in a special event on climate for Heads of State and Government hosted by the UN Secretary-General.
– African Union Peace and Security Council Meeting: He will also participate in the African Union Peace and Security Council meeting and meet with the Prime Minister of Sudan.
– Push for UN Security Council Reform: Nigeria is advocating for Africa to have at least two permanent seats on the UN Security Council, based on the Ezulwini Consensus and the Sirte Declaration.
