The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has announced plans to commence decarbonization of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja. This initiative aims to reduce the airport’s carbon footprint and mitigate the challenges posed by climate change. Decarbonization efforts may include:
– Improving Energy Efficiency: Transitioning to renewable energy sources and reducing energy consumption
– Electric Ground Handling Vehicles: Switching to electric vehicles to minimize emissions from ground handling operations
– Optimizing Air Traffic Management: Streamlining air traffic control processes to reduce queuing times and lower emissions from aircraft
– Sustainable Aviation Fuels: Exploring the use of sustainable aviation fuels and hydrogen power to reduce emissions from aircraft operations
The Abuja airport’s decarbonization plan aligns with Nigeria’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2060. The Federal Government has begun discussions with global financial institutions to secure over $60 million in climate finance for pilot green energy hubs, including a transformative hybrid energy project at a major Nigerian airport.
