Dangote Group to allow its workers at its refinery and petrochemicals join Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG.

The Dangote Group has agreed to allow workers at its refinery and petrochemicals operations to join the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG). This decision was made during a closed-door meeting with the Federal Government and NUPENG representatives in Abuja.

A draft Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is being prepared for signing by the parties involved, with a possible two-week implementation timeline. The agreement comes after NUPENG threatened industrial action over Dangote Refinery’s alleged anti-labour practices, including restricting workers’ right to unionize.

NUPENG had accused Dangote Refinery of attempting to impose “modern slavery” on Nigerian workers by denying them unionization rights. The Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammadu Dingyadi, had summoned Dangote Group and NUPENG for an emergency meeting to avert a nationwide strike.
