The Ebonyi State Government has increased the minimum wage of its civil servants from N70,000 to N90,000, effective immediately. This decision aims to enhance workers’ welfare and applies to all categories of the workforce. According to Chief Ikeuwa Omebe, the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, the government’s commitment to workers’ welfare is evident in this move, which is not driven by politics but by the need to support its workforce.
The state government has also cleared outstanding pensions and gratuities owed to retirees since Ebonyi’s creation in 1996. A verification exercise for local government retirees is currently underway, and payments will follow once completed. Additionally, the government plans to implement an eight-year tenure policy for directors, affecting permanent secretaries and directors who have served eight years at the same level.
This development demonstrates the government’s focus on human and infrastructural development, guided by the “people’s charter of needs” philosophy, prioritizing the real needs of the people. The adjustment is part of the government’s efforts to cushion economic pressures faced by public workers and retirees.
