The Federal Government has condemned the killing of two Nigerians in South Africa and is demanding a thorough investigation and accountability from South African authorities.

– The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa, said the killings have heightened anxiety among Nigerians in South Africa and require “urgent, credible remedial action”.
– Nigeria summoned South Africa’s Acting High Commissioner to Nigeria, Lesoli Machele, for a meeting with the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Dunoma Ahmed.
– FG is demanding:
1. *Thorough and impartial investigation* into the deaths
2. *Access to autopsy reports, post-mortem documents, and case files*

*1. April 2026 cases:*
– *Nnaemeka Matthew Andrew Ekpeyong*: Died on 21 April 2026 while in custody of the Tshwane Metro Police Department, after reportedly sustaining injuries linked to South African National Defence Force personnel.
– *Kelvin Chidiebere Amaramiro*: Died on 25 April 2026 at Livingstone Hospital, Eastern Cape, following an alleged assault by SANDF personnel.
*2. June 28, 2026 cases:*
– *Emeka Charles Iroegbu*: Allegedly killed by officers of the Tshwane Metro Police in Sunnyside, Pretoria, on June 28, 2026.
– *Musa Yunana Joe “Big Joe”*: Shot dead in front of his shop in Witbank, Mpumalanga, on June 28 by unidentified gunmen.

FG also condemned ongoing anti-foreigner protests in parts of South Africa calling for foreigners, especially blacks, to leave. The ministry described videos of the protests as “very disturbing” and criticized comments that stereotype Nigerians.
Nigeria also said it is fast-tracking a bilateral *Early Warning Mechanism* with South Africa to address rising xenophobic tensions.
The Consulate General in Johannesburg said it has opened formal cases with the South African Police Service and urged the Independent Police Investigative Directorate to ensure a transparent probe.
