A heartbreaking case out of Florida is sparking intense reactions across the world.
A 70-year-old man, Richard Seymour Ferguson, has been sentenced to 37 years in state prison after a tragic car crash caused by his unlicensed teenage son claimed the lives of four innocent people.
The tragedy happened on September 3, 2023, in Poinciana, Florida, when Ferguson’s 15-year-old son got behind the wheel of a 2012 Chevy Impala. Investigators say the teen was driving at speeds between 76 and 83 mph in a 30-mph residential zone before running a stop sign and crashing into a Honda Odyssey.
Inside that vehicle was Trinidad Hernandez, 50, along with her three grandch1ldren — Miley Cruz (11), Marvin Cruz (9), and 1-year-old Anayari Hernandez. All four lost their lives in the collision. The ch1ldren’s grandfather survived but suffered serious injuries.
Prosecutors argued that Ferguson knowingly allowed his underage, unlicensed son to drive unsupervised with friends, a decision they said directly led to the deadly crash. A jury later found him guilty of four counts of vehicular manslaughter.
During sentencing, the court heard that Ferguson is battling Stage 4 prostate cancer, and his defense requested house arrest due to his severe medical condition. Despite this, the judge denied the request and imposed the minimum prison sentence required under Florida law.
The teenager, now 17, was sentenced separately in juvenile court and will remain in detention until his 19th birthday.
The case has ignited widespread debate about parental responsibility, accountability, and how far the law should go when tragedy follows a preventable decision.
Four lives were lost in seconds — and one decision changed multiple families forever.
