The US has stopped visa processing for Nigeria, Russia, and 73 other countries, effective January 21, 2026. This decision is part of a broader reassessment of immigration procedures aimed at preventing foreign nationals from becoming a “public charge” and exploiting US public benefits. The affected countries include Somalia, Afghanistan, Brazil, Iran, Iraq, Egypt, Thailand, and Yemen, among others. The State Department will use its authority to deem ineligible potential immigrants who would become a public charge, considering factors like age, health, English proficiency, finances, and potential need for long-term care.
