The Federal Government of Nigeria has introduced mandatory pre-employment drug testing for all applicants seeking positions in the public service. This move aims to curb the rising menace of illicit drug use and its impact on national development, security, and workplace productivity. The policy, announced through a service-wide circular, directs Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to collaborate with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to conduct the tests.
The government cited concerns over the alarming rate of substance abuse, particularly among youths, as the primary reason for this decision. The policy is part of broader efforts to promote discipline, productivity, and integrity within the civil service.
