The U.S. State Department has announced the cancellation of about 85,000 visas – a record number – and a good chunk of those belong to Nigerians. The revocations are being framed as a security‑driven move: visas are being pulled when the holder has overstayed, committed a crime or is deemed a safety risk .Many of the affected Nigerians received letters telling them to hand in their passports, only to discover the visas were already invalid – sometimes even at the airport. The embassy says the policy is part of a broader, worldwide review of the more than 55 million valid U.S. visas, not a targeted attack on Nigeria . So, thousands of Nigerian travelers, students and professionals are suddenly scrambling to re‑apply or figure out next steps, while the U.S. maintains the cancellations are necessary for “protecting American citizens.”
