The House of Representatives has passed a bill for the second reading to establish a specialized medical college for the Nigerian Armed Forces. This college aims to train medical doctors, specialist physicians, and allied health professionals specifically for the armed forces and other uniformed services.
The proposed Nigerian Military Medical College (NMMC) will operate under the Ministry of Defence, collaborating with the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN). Its key objectives include:
– Addressing Medical Brain Drain: Tackling the ongoing emigration of Nigerian physicians and frequent strikes disrupting civilian medical education.
– Military-Specific Training: Providing training in tropical medicine, trauma care, CBRN response, and austere-environment medicine.
– Operational Advantage: Ensuring a disciplined, reliable medical corps insulated from civilian strikes.
The bill’s sponsor, Babajimi Benson, highlights that the college will enhance the armed forces’ healthcare capacity, improve troop health, and reduce reliance on civilian medical services. The NMMC will also support operational research relevant to Nigeria’s security context .
