President Bola Tinubu has indeed cancelled his planned trips to South Africa and Angola, and Vice President Kashim Shettima will be leading Nigeria’s delegations to both summits. This decision comes amidst recent security concerns, including the abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi State and an attack on a church in Kwara State.
Tinubu’s spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, stated that the president cancelled the trips to focus on addressing the security issues and to receive briefings on the situations. Shettima is currently en route to South Africa to attend the G20 Leaders’ Summit on Tinubu’s behalf and will then proceed to Angola for the AU-EU Summit.
The opposition party, PDP, has criticized Tinubu’s decision, calling it a “perfunctory gesture” and “tokenism”. They argue that true leadership requires concrete action, not symbolic responses.
