Nnamdi Kanu sentenced to life imprisonment

Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has been sentenced to life imprisonment by a Federal High Court in Abuja for terrorism-related charges. Justice James Omotosho found Kanu guilty on all seven counts, including terrorism, incitement, and membership of a proscribed organization.

Key Highlights of the Sentence:

– Life Imprisonment: Kanu was sentenced to life imprisonment on counts 1, 4, 5, and 6.
– Additional Sentences: He received 20 years imprisonment for count 3 and 5 years for count 7, to run concurrently.
– No Death Penalty: The judge opted for life imprisonment instead of the death penalty, citing global trends against capital punishment.
– Terrorism Charges: Kanu’s broadcasts and orders were deemed to have incited violence and undermined national security.

Kanu’s trial has been marked by controversy, with his defense team alleging irregularities and executive overreach. The IPOB leader had previously accused prosecution witnesses of perjury and filed a criminal complaint against them.
