Esther Okoronkwo, the Super Falcons forward, is speaking out after being snubbed from the final shortlist for the CAF Women’s Player of the Year Award. Despite being part of the initial 10-player shortlist, she didn’t make the final three, which includes Rasheedat Ajibade, Ghizlane Chebbak, and Sanaa Mssoudy.
Okoronkwo took to Instagram, expressing her gratitude for the support she’s received across Africa, but also emphasized that her focus remains on the pitch. “CAF’s decision is noted, but my focus stays on the pitch where recognition is earned, not awarded. Awards don’t always reflect reality, but the pitch never lies,” she wrote.
This isn’t just about Okoronkwo; it’s about the value of performance in African women’s football. Many fans and analysts are questioning CAF’s selection criteria, given Okoronkwo’s standout performances for both club and country, including her crucial role in Nigeria’s record-extending 10th WAFCON triumph.
The CAF Awards ceremony is happening tomorrow, November 19, 2025, in Rabat, Morocco.
