Protesters, mainly indigenes of Kano State, gathered at the National Assembly to demand the immediate confirmation of Engr. Abdullahi Garba Ramat as Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC). The Senate had completed Ramat’s screening and recommended his confirmation, but the process has been delayed.
The protesters expressed concern that the delay sends a wrong signal about the credibility of the confirmation process and may discourage qualified Nigerians from public service. They urged Senate President Godswill Akpabio to expedite the process, emphasizing Ramat’s qualifications and experience.
The delay has sparked controversy, with some accusing the Senate of sabotaging the power sector reforms. The coalition of civil society organizations has threatened to mobilize protests if Ramat’s confirmation isn’t finalized within 48 hours.
