A heartbreaking incident has shaken the community, as Gbemisola Akayinode, a 36-year-old Nigerian woman living in the US, has been arrested and charged with felony murder after her 9-year-old daughter, Oluwasikemi, died from hyperthermia. On July 1, Akayinode left Oluwasikemi in a parked car for over 8 hours while she worked at a manufacturing plant in Galena Park, Texas, with temperatures reaching 99°F (37°C). The child was found unresponsive and pronounced dead at the hospital. Akayinode claimed she couldn’t afford daycare, but investigators found her workplace was covering childcare costs. She’s being held at the Harris County Jail with a $500,000 bond.
