The Nigerian Senate has passed a bill to Create the Nigeria Mines Rangers Service  to Combat Illegal Mining Activities in the country.

The Nigerian Senate has passed a bill to establish the Nigeria Mines Rangers Service (NMRS) aimed at combating illegal mining activities and promoting sustainable mining practices in the country. This specialized security outfit will curb illegal mining, rescue trapped miners, provide emergency medical care, investigate mining accidents, and enforce compliance with mining regulations.

Key Objectives:

– Combat Illegal Mining: Curb illegal mining activities, estimated to cost Nigeria $9 billion-$15.9 billion annually
– Enhance Security: Protect mining sites, prevent banditry, and promote environmental sustainability
– Boost Revenue: Increase revenue collection and support local communities

The bill’s sponsors argue that the NMRS will help diversify Nigeria’s economy, reduce oil dependence, and create jobs. However, some government agencies, including the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), oppose the bill, citing potential overlap with existing responsibilities.
