The Federal Ministry of Education has announced that mathematics is no longer a compulsory subject for arts students seeking admission into universities and polytechnics in Nigeria. According to the revised National Guidelines for Entry Requirements into Nigerian Tertiary Institutions, students in arts and humanities will only need to have five credit passes in relevant subjects, including English Language, obtained in not more than two sittings.
New Admission Requirements:
– Universities: Minimum of five credit passes in relevant subjects, including English Language, with mathematics being mandatory only for science, technology, and certain social science courses.
– Polytechnics (ND Level): Minimum of four credit passes in relevant subjects, with English Language required for non-science courses.
– Colleges of Education (NCE Level): Minimum of four credit passes in relevant subjects, with English Language mandatory for arts and social science courses.
This change aims to broaden access to tertiary education, creating opportunities for more students to pursue arts and humanities disciplines. The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, described the reform as a deliberate effort to expand access to tertiary education and promote inclusivity
