PENGASSAN has responded to Vice President Kashim Shettima’s criticism of their strike over a dispute with the Dangote Refinery, stating that Nigeria is bigger than both Dangote and the Presidency. The union’s president, Festus Osifo, emphasized that PENGASSAN’s primary mandate is to protect its members’ jobs and will take necessary actions to achieve this goal.
The dispute began when the Dangote Refinery allegedly sacked workers for joining PENGASSAN, leading to a strike that disrupted oil and gas production, causing fuel shortages and price hikes. Vice President Shettima had urged PENGASSAN to handle the dispute with caution, highlighting the importance of Dangote’s investment to Nigeria’s economy.
PENGASSAN’s response underscores the tension between labor rights and economic interests in Nigeria. The union maintains it will continue to advocate for its members’ rights, while the government and Dangote Refinery emphasize the need to protect investments and maintain economic stability.
