British teenager Marcus Fakana, 19, tragically passed away in a car crash in Tottenham, North London, just three months after being released from a Dubai jail. He was serving a one-year sentence for having a consensual relationship with a 17-year-old British girl while on holiday in Dubai, which is against UAE law.
The crash occurred around 1 a.m. on October 3, 2025, when the car Fakana was in failed to stop for police and collided with another vehicle. He was taken to the hospital but sadly passed away shortly after arrival.
Fakana had received a royal pardon from Dubai’s ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, and was released on July 3, 2025. His case drew widespread attention, highlighting the UAE’s harsh laws on personal relationships.
Tributes poured in on social media, with friends and supporters calling his death a “painful reminder” of the time he lost while imprisoned abroad. Radha Stirling, CEO of Detained in Dubai, expressed her heartbreak, saying, “Marcus spent the majority of this year in a Dubai prison, which no doubt caused him long-lasting mental anguish”.
