The recent attack on security operatives at Agu Centre, located on the border of Katsina-Ala and Ukum Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Benue State, has resulted in a tragic loss of lives. Eight more corpses of policemen have been recovered, bringing the total death toll to 11 – 10 policemen and 1 Benue State Civil Protection Guard (BSCPG) operative.
Key Details of the Attack:
– Date and Location: The ambush occurred on Friday, September 19, 2025, at Agu Centre, a volatile border zone between Katsina-Ala and Ukum LGAs.
– Security Operation: A joint team of security operatives, including Operation Zenda, Benue State Civil Protection Guard, and Special Intervention Squad, ventured into the area to confront armed invaders.
– Attackers: Suspected armed herdsmen, reportedly supported by local militia gangs, numbering close to 1,000, laid an ambush and opened fire on the security team.
– Casualties: 16 security personnel are feared dead, with several others missing. Two Hilux vans were burnt, and several motorcycles were carted away by the attackers.
Government Response:
– Condemnation: Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun condemned the attack, describing it as “barbaric” and “an assault on our nation’s defenders.”
– Investigation: The police have arrested six suspects linked to the deadly ambush and are intensifying efforts to rescue missing personnel and restore peace in the area.
– Deployment of Additional Troops: Governor Hyacinth Alia has promised a “robust response” and deployed additional troops to the area.
