The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has indeed issued a strong warning to Qatar Airways over alleged passenger mistreatment. Here’s what’s happening:
– Incident Background: A Nigerian passenger was accused by a Qatar Airways cabin crew member of sexual harassment during boarding in Lagos for a flight to the US via Doha. Despite the crew member not reporting the incident in Lagos, the passenger was arrested and detained for 18 hours in Doha, fined, and forced to sign a document written in Arabic without understanding its contents.
– NCAA’s Stance: The NCAA has criticized Qatar Airways for disregarding its directives and neglecting to respond to passenger complaints. Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Michael Achimugu, stated that the airline’s behavior will no longer be tolerated and warned of stiff penalties for non-compliance.
– Regulatory Action: The NCAA has announced its intention to impose sanctions on Qatar Airways for violating consumer protection regulations under Part 19 of the NCAA Regulations 2023. Other airlines, including Royal Air Maroc and Saudi Air, have also been cautioned for similar infractions and risk heavy sanctions if they fail to comply.
– Passenger Treatment: Achimugu emphasized that Nigerian passengers deserve respect and protection, and airlines must comply with local regulations. He stressed that providing false information to the NCAA or disregarding its directives is unlawful and that bilateral air service agreements signed with Nigeria must be upheld.
The NCAA’s decision to sanction Qatar Airways demonstrates its commitment to upholding consumer protection laws and promoting fair treatment of passengers.
