Hundreds of supporters and former top government officials have gathered at the Port Harcourt International Airport to welcome Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, following the suspension of emergency rule in the state. The governor is expected to arrive at the VIP section of the airport, marking his first public appearance since the restoration of full democratic governance in Rivers State.
Governor Fubara was supposed to resume office after President Bola Tinubu lifted the six-month state of emergency imposed on Rivers State on Wednesday, September 17. However, Fubara failed to show up at the Government House on Thursday, where his supporters had gathered to welcome him. Instead, he is currently in Abuja and is scheduled to fly into Rivers State later today.
Supporters’ Reaction:
– Thousands of supporters gathered at the airport, dressed in colorful attire, singing and dancing in anticipation of Fubara’s arrival.
– Members of the Simplified Movement, Women Unite for SIM, and other groups are among those waiting to receive the governor.
– Supporters expressed frustration and uncertainty over Fubara’s absence on Thursday, with some dispersing due to hunger and lack of updates.
Government Developments:
– The Rivers State House of Assembly has resumed plenary after the six-month suspension.
– The Sole Administrator, Rear Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, officially handed over power to Governor Fubara, marking the end of the emergency rule.
