Nigerians in South Africa are facing renewed xenophobic threats from Operation Dudula, an anti-migrant group accused of blocking foreigners from accessing public hospitals. The group’s actions have led to disturbing incidents, including:
– Denial of Medical Care: Pregnant women have been forced to give birth on bare floors outside hospitals due to Operation Dudula’s blockade. A nursing mother was also barred from taking her baby for immunization at a public hospital.
– Harassment and Attacks: Operation Dudula members have been confronting immigrants, inspecting businesses, and blocking clinics. The group claims to be fighting illegal immigration and the “unlawful takeover of jobs and services” by foreigners.
– Constitutional Concerns: The group’s actions have been deemed “purely illegal” and a violation of Section 27 of the South African Constitution, which guarantees access to healthcare.
– Diplomatic Intervention: Nigerian community leaders are urging urgent diplomatic intervention, with the Nigerian Embassy promising to engage South African authorities. African ambassadors in South Africa are also in talks with the government to secure a lasting solution to the crisis.
The situation has sparked widespread condemnation, with former Nigerian diplomats describing the treatment of foreigners in South Africa as “illegal and criminal”. The South African government faces criticism for not curbing Operation Dudula’s activities, which have been linked to xenophobic violence and harassment.
