Tanker drivers under the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers have threatened to stop fuel loading over the seeming cold war between them and the management of the Dangote refinery.

The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has threatened to halt fuel loading at Dangote Refinery depots starting September 8, 2025, due to a dispute over the refinery’s plan to deploy 4,000 to 10,000 compressed natural gas (CNG) trucks for direct fuel distribution. NUPENG accuses Dangote Refinery management of alleged anti-labour practices, specifically requiring new drivers to sign undertakings not to join any union, which they consider an affront to workers’ rights. NUPENG has appealed to relevant oil industry regulatory agencies to intervene and compel the Dangote Refinery to respect workers’ rights. The union has also called on the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and global union federations to stand in solidarity with them.
