The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has filed a Federal High Court suit against the Inspector-General of Police’s tinted-glass permit policy, deeming it unlawful and a violation of fundamental rights. The policy requires vehicle owners to obtain a digital permit for tinted windows, aiming to curb security challenges and ensure transparency.
The NBA argues that the policy infringes on citizens’ rights to dignity, privacy, freedom of movement, and property. They also question the legal foundation of the initiative, citing a 1991 military decree that may not be justifiable in a democratic society. Additionally, the association highlights concerns about potential harassment and extortion by law enforcement officers.
The Nigeria Police Force had announced a 30-day grace period for motorists to regularize their permits, which has been extended to August 12, 2025. The police emphasize that the policy aims to differentiate between legitimate users, such as those with medical conditions, and criminals who exploit tinted vehicles for illicit activities.
