Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal has expressed frustration about the limitations of his power in combating banditry. Despite having real-time intelligence on bandit movements, Lawal claims he can’t take direct action because security agencies in Zamfara only take orders from Abuja. He believes that if given direct control over security agencies, he could end banditry in Zamfara within two months. Lawal’s administration has supported security agencies with logistics and personnel, and he’s calling for greater autonomy in security matters, including the possibility of state police.
