The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has confirmed that the state of emergency declared in Rivers State will expire on September 18. This declaration was made by President Bola Tinubu on March 18, 2025, suspending Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and all elected lawmakers of the state House of Assembly for an initial period of six months.
Wike stated that the expiration of the emergency rule will pave the way for the state House of Assembly to resume its legislative duties and for Governor Fubara to return to office. He also commended the conduct of the local government election in Rivers State, describing it as peaceful and successful.
The minister believes that with the successful election, the conditions are right for lifting the state of emergency since both state and local governments now have representation. Wike’s statement signals a potential political ceasefire, suggesting that the crisis is nearing its end and normal governance is set to resume in the state.
