Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has condemned the killing of five persons in Ajana Umuna, Ezinachi, Okigwe Local Government Area, describing the attack as “unconscionable and barbaric.”

Gunmen had invaded the community over the weekend, killing five residents, including a vigilante operative, George Edeh; a couple, Emeka and Chikodi Ezeagwula; as well as Chidi Chileke and Ejike Nwankwo. The attackers also razed the home of the community’s youth security leader and destroyed five motorcycles.

In response, the state government has deployed operatives of the Nigerian Army and Police to track down the perpetrators and restore law and order.

Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Declan Emelumba, who disclosed this on Monday, said the governor had directed security agencies to ensure that the killers were apprehended without delay. He described the incident as a breach of security, but assured residents that the situation was being contained.

“The government is on top of the situation, working closely with security agencies to restore peace and protect lives and property,” Emelumba said, while urging residents to go about their normal activities without fear.

He however accused some opposition politicians of attempting to exploit the tragedy for political gain by inflaming passions and instilling fear among the people.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in Imo, Aboki Danjuma, has ordered a joint manhunt for the suspected IPOB/ESN members behind the killings. He said tactical teams of the command, in synergy with sister agencies and local vigilantes, had already commenced operations in Okigwe and surrounding areas.

Danjuma, who is personally leading the operation, condemned the attack as “senseless and heinous,” vowing that no stone would be left unturned in bringing the culprits to justice. He also commiserated with the families of the victims, prayed for the repose of their souls, and wished the injured survivor a quick recovery.

The CP appealed to residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies, assuring that adequate reinforcement had been made to secure Okigwe and its environs.
