Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has been convicted of terrorism-related charges by a Federal High Court in Abuja. He was found guilty on seven counts, including:
– Terrorism: Kanu’s broadcasts and orders to IPOB were deemed to have incited deadly attacks on security forces and citizens.
– Incitement: He was convicted of inciting violence during the #EndSARS protests, leading to the killing of security personnel and destruction of government properties.
– Membership and Leadership of an Unlawful Organization: Kanu was found guilty of leading IPOB, a proscribed organization.
– Threats to National Security: His actions were deemed a threat to Nigeria’s sovereignty.
– Issuing and Enforcing Stay-at-Home Orders: Kanu’s orders caused significant disruptions in southeastern Nigeria.
– Guidance on Making Bombs: He was convicted of providing instructions on bomb-making.
– Incitement to Violence: Kanu’s broadcasts were deemed to have incited violence against security forces and citizens.
The prosecution had argued that Kanu’s statements incited violence and undermined Nigeria’s sovereignty. The court has ordered sentencing, which may include the death penalty.
